Junction 8 is the highest point on the M25; the climb up to the junction on Reigate Hill has always caused slow traffic. When it was widened, the clockwise slip road was altered to diverge at the bottom of the hill rather than the top. The next section opened in October 1985 for £46.1m; it was the only motorway to have cracks develop in its surface and require repairs BEFORE opening.
