Peterlee was in the first wave of New Towns, and was designated in 1948. It's unique in being named after a person and not a geographical feature. Peter Lee was a local coal miner, a Methodist preacher, a chairman of Durham County Council and President of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain. It's lucky that he had a name that also worked when applied to a town.
