The M1 loses its importance as the main road north here - since opening in 1966, the elusive 'NORTH' has shunted traffic onto the M18 and then the A1 up towards Newcastle. These days the M1 intersects the A1 directly near Leeds, bypassing some nasty bits of road between here and there, but remains signposted only to Leeds.
