The Channel Tunnel is the reason the M20 as it is exists today. Between 1981 and 1991 there was a 14 mile gap between J8 at Maidstone and J9 at Ashford - the Tunnel helped fill in the gap, so to speak. A lot of our freight traffic will be leaving us here, but we shall carry on nonetheless. Between J11a and J12, the M20 eastbound (our direction) is 3 lanes, whereas the westbound carrigeway only has 2 lanes.
