These services are a relatively new addition to the M1, opening in the 1990s. They're located off the next junction, 23A, and it's a bit of a journey to get in and out negotiating all the roundabouts and access roads for East Midlands Airport.

Back when the M1 was first built here, sliproad stubs were left for a service area to be plugged in, and we'll pass them just after this sign - but they were never used, because putting the services at the junction means they're accessible to traffic on the A42 as well.
