Uniquely, the designers of the Smart Motorway on the M1 here between junctions 39 and 42 didn't use overhead gantries for all the signs - several junctions use these normal "fork" signs on the verge, made far bigger than usual. It's not clear why but they look weirdly oversized as you go past.
