Variable speed limits start here, and will be with us for quite some time. Most of the M1 is now a Smart Motorway of one kind or another, so gaps in the variable limit will be the exception from here to Leeds. The first bit, starting here, just has variable limits, though - it's otherwise still a conventional motorway with hard shoulders.
