A blue sign with a diagram showing a branch off the road ahead and the following text.
Forward destinations: The SOUTH; Sheffield.
Exit destinations: Barnsley; Manchester; A628.
Junction number: 37.
The engineers who designed the M1 back in the early 60s used long sliproads to solve all sorts of problems in Yorkshire. Here, the super-long sliproads on the south side of the junction are because the motorway tackles a long and relatively steep hill; the equally super-long sliproads on the north side are to deal with an awkward dip under a railway line.
