Around here you'll see several concrete footbridges with improbably spindly supports, that divide into a Y shape of even thinner struts at the top. They're incredibly clever, but not as resilient as we now require from roadside structures, so since the 1990s they've been surrounded by huge concrete blocks for fear an errant vehicle will topple them.
