After this sliproad departs, we turn very noticeably through 90 degrees to head south. In the early stages of planning a motorway network, what's now the M18 was going to be the northward continuation of the M1, and the road we're on now was going to be a spur towards Sheffield. You can see even now that the M18 is a straighter continuation of the M1 from London.
