The M1 was extended north from its original terminus near Rugby in stages through the 1960s. This section was on the motorway's third northward extension, opened in December 1965 - hot on the heels of two other projects further south that had opened in the previous 18 months. It's hard now to conceive of just how fast some of the motorway network was built.
