You can't see any of it from the motorway, but if you look at this junction on an aerial photograph you might be surprised to see large parts of the surrounding countryside excavated down to the bowels of the earth. About a fifth of the UK's stone comes from quarries around Bardon, some of which have been edging closer to the centre of the planet for 400 years.
