Almost all of the M25 is some kind of Smart Motorway now, and variable speed limits are the norm throughout. However, the section ahead of us through Essex still has hard shoulders, as do others in Hertfordshire and Berkshire. They were some of the last conventional motorway widenings before the Smart Motorway programme got under way.
