This northern bit of the M5, from the M50 at junction 8 up to the outskirts of Birmingham at junction 4, was a very early motorway project, opening in 1962 with just two lanes each way. It was widened to three lanes in the 1990s and then to four, with the Smart Motorway works, in the 2010s.
