The motorway we're travelling on - this great length from Penrith to Carnforth, 33 miles of road over rugged moors and twisting through the Lune Gorge - was one enormous project, opening in one go on 23 October 1970. It's both one of the longest and the most difficult single motorway projects ever built in the UK.
