Smart Motorway gantry sign
A gantry structure spanning the motorway with electronic signals, blue signs showing an exit and the following text.
Exit destinations: A449 ; Stafford (S).
Forward destinations: The SOUTH, (M6 Toll); Birmingham, Wolverhampton M6 .
This junction was the southern end of the M6 for several years until the motorway made its next lurch south, to junction 11, in 1966. It then took another eight years for the remaining sections to fall into place to complete the link to the M1.
