It is designed as a low capacity junction and has no major importance other than locally. From here to the A1(M) the M25 was built over the top of the A6 London Colney bypass. After the M25 opened, the A6 was reclassified south of Luton as the A1081. Through traffic was then directed onto the M1/M25 at Luton.
