The A69 will get you not just to Hexham but also Carlisle. There have long been ambitions to turn it into a fast expressway right across the north of England, but the most recent movement on that front pitted it against the A66. That road got a full dualling package worth over £1bn while the A69 got a new flyover near Hexham.
