The length of motorway we're on now - from J13 to J10 - is one of the earliest Smart Motorway projects and still has a "dynamic hard shoulder" that opens and closes at various times of day depending on traffic levels. It's confusing but plans to revisit this stretch and harmonise it with the other sections nearby were scrapped.
