This sign is a good opportunity to observe that we’re not actually in Birmingham - the M5 doesn’t enter it at any point, and the closest it comes is the boundary of the city of Birmingham following the east side of the motorway for a while near Quinton without ever putting any of the M5 in Birmingham itself. We’re in the Black Country, the network of towns that form a continuous urban blanket west of Birmingham.
